No, Rafael Devers is not going to invest in a Wendy's franchise.
He's not going to buy a cattle ranch and figure out a way to keep beef prices low either.
What he is going to do is continue to insist that he and he alone is the rightful third baseman of the 2025 Boston Red Sox, even though there is a mountain of evidence to prove that he is a defensive liability at the position.
On Tuesday, in the latest chapter of the ongoing spring training soap opera known as Days of Our Devers, our protagonist Rafael insisted to the media that he has no beef with the team in them asking him to change positions to designated hitter in order to make room for Alex Bregman at third base. Bregman by the way happens to be a gold glove winning third basemen and is far more qualified to man the position then Devers is at the current moment.
Yet here is Devers continually insisting that he should be the third baseman and not Bregman.
To my knowledge, no one who isn't already associated with team has asked Devers to move off the hot corner and become a full-time designated hitter.
So if Devers is still peeved and refusing to change his role on the team, common sense would dictate that there is some sort of beef existent, right?
If no one outside of the team has asked Devers, to make the switch in positions and he's still angry about it, then how can Devers claim that his beef is not with the team?
Let's give Devers the benefit of the doubt. If in fact his beef is not with the team as he claims, then who is it with?
Is it with the media who continues to enhance the narrative that Devers is an overpaid malcontent who has put himself over the good of the team?
Is it with the fans who have grown increasingly frustrated with his lack of defensive improvement year after year?
Is it with Alex Bregman, who members of the previously aforementioned constituencies have anointed as a defensive savior armed with a 40 million dollar golden parachute to solidify the Sox infield defense and crack a few bombs over the Monster? If the latter is true, then it represents a serious threat to team chemistry.
Or, is it with himself as a man quite aware of his shoddy defensive ability who is trying desperately to hold onto the misguided belief that he deserves anything he wants as the team's longest tenured player and biggest attraction?
For me to give Devers the benefit of the doubt would completely invalidate the purpose of this column.
Why did the Red Sox even sign Alex Brgegman?
Why did they ask Devers to take one for the team and change positions?
For Devers to suggest that he does not have a beef with team is absolutely ludicrous!
The vultures are circling Raffy, are you going to do what's best for the team, or you going to continue to act entitled and petty?
The choice is yours.
